Blades (edge weapons) are tools (for protection, fighting, kitchen, farm, hunting, or practical use) with a cutting edge and applied or integral grip. Bladed weapons include axes, pipe tomahawks, spontoons, swords, daggers, knives, and bayonets. Blades are generally used to cut, hack, or slash. Some edged weapons (such as swords) may permit thrusting and stabbing.
The blade was an essential tool on the frontier and continues to be a utilitarian device. Today, bladesmiths forge and file blades, which are still utilitarian. However, many of the blades made today include leather or silver sheathes and are true American art forms.
